Here we see the normal hair follicle. Sebum is produced by the sebaceous gland and passes up the hair follicle and onto the surface of the skin where it acts as a waterproofing agent.

Normally there is a wide opening to the hair follicle and the sebum can easily pass onto the surface of the skin, as a small quantity of sebum is produced the skin does not feel greasy.
